# Languages

> Sila speaks 60 languages. How your language is chosen, what it changes, how AI Contacts pick theirs, how message translation works, and the full list.

Sila is available in 60 languages on the web, the desktop app, iPhone, Android, and silahq.com. Your language is one setting: it follows your account to every device, and it is the language your AI Contacts use with you. People who write in different languages can translate each other's messages in place.

## Choose your language

* **When you sign up.** **Choose your language** is the first step. It opens on the language your browser already uses; pick another if you prefer.
* **Later.** Open **Profile** and choose a language under **Language**. The list shows every language in its own name, with its name in your current language next to it ("Deutsch — German"). The workspace reloads in the new language and the choice is saved to your account.
* **On your phone.** The [mobile app](/app/mobile) has the same **Language** row on your profile. The app also follows your account: a language picked on the web is the app's language the next time you open it.

Accounts that have never chosen a language are asked once, before continuing, with their browser's language preselected.

Until you choose, Sila follows your browser's or phone's language and falls back to English. Close neighbours map to the nearest language Sila carries: Norwegian Nynorsk to Norwegian Bokmål, Cantonese to Traditional Chinese (Hong Kong), Bosnian to Croatian, Montenegrin to Serbian, Moldovan to Romanian, and Portuguese from anywhere other than Brazil to European Portuguese.

## What your language changes

* **Every screen.** The web app, desktop app, iPhone and Android apps, sign-in, invites, and onboarding. Dates, numbers, and plurals follow your language's rules. A string added to Sila in the last few days may show in English until its translation lands.
* **Your AI Contacts.** Everything an AI Contact writes to you, in DMs, @mention replies, questions, progress updates, [Check-ups](/app/features/automations), and [Search](/app/features/search) answers, is in your language, unless the AI Contact has its own language set (see below). Code, commands, file and folder names, URLs, @mention chips, product names, and quoted text are kept exactly as they are. Ask it to switch languages and it will.
* **Right-to-left layout.** Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, and Urdu lay the whole app out right to left. On the mobile app the direction changes at the next launch.
* **The website.** silahq.com and its pages are in your language too. Add `?lang=<code>` to any page (`silahq.com/?lang=de`), or use the language picker in the footer, which groups the languages by region.

Not translated: these docs (English), the messages people and AI Contacts write (use [translation](#message-translation) instead), and the names and instructions you gave your AI Contacts.

## An AI Contact's language

Every AI Contact has a **Language** section in its editor, and the same row on its profile card. Anyone who can edit the AI Contact can change it.

| Setting | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Auto (each person's language)** | The default. It answers each person in the language that person chose for Sila. In a groupchat with a German speaker and a Japanese speaker, each gets replies in their own language. |
| A specific language | It writes in that language to everyone, whatever each person chose. Use it for a Shared AI Contact serving customers in one market, or a team that works in one language. |

In both modes it reads every message in the language it was written in, and it never translates other people's messages unless asked. [Outside AI Contacts](/app/integrations/bring-your-agents) such as Claude Code or Cursor get the same instruction.

## Message translation

When someone writes in a language that isn't yours, a small **Translate to …** link naming your language (for example **Translate to Español**) appears under their message. Choose it and the message is replaced with its translation, marked **Translated from …** with the language it was written in; **Show original** switches back and **Show translation** returns to the translation.

* A message is translated once per language. The first reader in a language asks for it; everyone reading in that language sees it from then on, and it stays translated across reloads.
* If the message is edited, the translation is redone the next time someone asks.
* If it turns out the message was already in your language, the link disappears for that message.
* Your own messages are never offered for translation.
* Voice and video messages are translated from their transcript. The translated transcript appears under the player; **Show original** shows the transcript as spoken.
* AI Contacts in the conversation see the translations readers asked for, so they know what each person read.

Sila decides whether to offer a translation from the message itself: its alphabet (a Cyrillic or Arabic message to a Latin-script reader), or for Latin-script text its words, with a clear margin so English is never offered to a French reader over one stray word. Languages whose readers understand each other's text, such as Brazilian and European Portuguese, Indonesian and Malay, Danish and Norwegian Bokmål, Croatian, Serbian and Slovenian, Czech and Slovak, or the three Chinese variants, are never offered across.

If a translation fails, the link reads **Couldn't translate · Try again**. Translations are free and don't use your workspace's credits.

## All 60 languages

Each language is listed in its own name, as Sila's pickers show it. The code is what `?lang=` takes on silahq.com.
